Tin

Occurrence, isolation & synthesis

Almost silver-white, lustrous, soft, very malleable, ductile metal. When being bent, it emits a "tin cry" [7].

Occurrence

In nature, tin is found in the Earth's crust, 6 ppm, in minerals such as cassiterite, stannite and tealite [7]. The isotopes found in nature are 112Sn (0.95 %, stable), 114Sn (0.65 %, stable), 115Sn (0.34%, stable), 116Sn (14.24 %, stable), 117Sn (7.57 %, stable), 118Sn (24.01 %, stable), 119Sn (8.59 %, stable), 120Sn (32.97 %, stable), 122Sn (4.71 %, stable) and 124Sn (5.98 %, stable) [7].

In pure solid form, tin exist in a tetragonal crystal structure [3], but can also be found in an amorphous form (gray tin) [7].
