DiscoveryRadon was discovered by the German chemist Friedrich Ernst Dorn in 1900, while studying radium's decay. The isolated gas was obtained by Sir William Ramsay and Robert Whytlaw-Gray in 1908 [7].
Origin of nameThe element was originally named radium emanation by Dorn. When the element was isolated, Ramsay and Gray named the element niton, from the latin word nitens, which means shining. The element has been named radon since 1923 [7].
