DiscoveryIn 1755, the Scottish chemist Joseph Black recognized magnesium as a separate element, but it wasn't until 1808, the English chemist Humphry Davy was able to obtain the metal, and only in an impure form. The French pharmacist and chemist Antoine-Alexandre Brutus Bussy was the first to succeed in isolating the metal in the pure state in 1831 [11].
