Zirconium

Chemical reactions

Reaction of zirconium with acids

Zirconium does not react with most acids, under normal conditions. It does dissolve in hydrofluoric acid, HF, most likely forming fluoro complexes

Reaction of zirconium with air

Zirconium does not react with air under normal conditions. If brought to burn, zirconium will react with oxygen, O2.

Zr(s) + O2(g) ZrO2(s)

Reaction of zirconium with bases

Zirconium does not appear to react wih alkalis, under normal conditions.

Reaction of zirconium with halogens

Zirconium reacts with halogens, when heated, forming the corresponding zirconium(IV) halides.

Zr(s) + 2 F2(g) ZrF4(s) [white]
Zr(s) + 2 Cl2(g) ZrCl4(s) [white]
Zr(s) + 2 Br2(g) ZrBr4(s) [white]
Zr(s) + 2 I2(g) ZrI4(s) [white]

Reaction of zirconium with water

Zirconium does not reacts with water, under normal conditions.
