Scientists working at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, first reported the production of dubnium in 1967. They bombarded atoms of americium-243 with ions of neon-22, forming atoms of dubnium-260 and five free neutrons and atoms of dubnium-261 and four free neutrons [3].

Origin of name

Named after the Dubna laboratory in the USSR/Russia, where important contributions to the creation of transfermium elements have originated [1, 3]. The Russians did not suggest a name for the element when they made it, and the Berkeley Group proposed the name hahnium after the German scientist Otto Hahn, and the symbol Ha, when they suceeded in creating the element in 1970. The name dubnium was recommended by IUPAC in 1977 [3].
