Berkelium

History


Discovery


Berkelium was discovered in December 1949 at Berkeley, California, USA, by Thompson, Ghiorso and Seaborg by cyclotron bombardment of milligram amounts of 241Am with helium ions, creating 243Bk. The first visible amounts of berkelium compound, was produced in 1962 as berkelium chloride. It weighed just 3 billionth of a gram [2].


Origin of name


Named after Berkeley, a city in California and home of the University of California, USA [2].
