Berkelium

Berkelium was discovered in December 1949 at Berkeley, California, USA, by Thompson, Ghiorso and Seaborg by cyclotron bombardment of milligram amounts of ²⁴¹Am with helium ions, creating ²⁴³Bk. The first visible amounts of berkelium compound, was produced in 1962 as berkelium chloride. It weighed just 3 billionth of a gram [2].

Named after Berkeley, a city in California and home of the University of California, USA [2].
