In pure solid form, americium exist in the following forms:
α-form: double hexagonal close-packed crystal at < 658 °C 
β-form: face-centered cubic crystal from 793 to 1004 °C 
γ-form: no crystal form specified from > ~1050 °C 
Am has been isolated by reduction of either AmF3 or AmO2 :
241Am can be isolated by extraction of decay products from strongly neutron bombarded 241Pu .
243Am can be prepared by neutron irradiation of 241Am .
