Americium

Occurrence, isolation & synthesis

Silvery metal, ductile, very malleable and non-magnetic [4].

Occurrence

In pure solid form, americium exist in the following forms:
α-form: double hexagonal close-packed crystal at < 658 °C [4]
β-form: face-centered cubic crystal from 793 to 1004 °C [4]
γ-form: no crystal form specified from > ~1050 °C [4]

Isolation

Am has been isolated by reduction of either AmF3 or AmO2 [3]:

Preparation

241Am can be isolated by extraction of decay products from strongly neutron bombarded 241Pu [3].

243Am can be prepared by neutron irradiation of 241Am [3].
