Discovery


The elements was discovered by the Swedish pharmacist and chemist Carl-Wilhelm Scheele in 1774. Same year, the Swedish chemist Johan Gottlieb Gahn was the first to isolate the metal [11].

Origin of name


From the Latin word magnes meaning magnet, as pyrolusite (MnO2, one of the primary manganese sources) has magnetic properties [11].
