Argon

Biological properties

Inhalation

Argon has neuroprotective properties. The effect is not well understood, but it appears that argon mediates significant reduction of TLR2 and TLR4 receptor density and protein expression [6]. Another experiment showed that argon in the mixture argon 74%, CO2 5%, O2 21%) relaxed the pulmonary circulation. GABA-receptors appear to be involved in this [5].

Argon has been shown to have antiapoptotic activity by inhibiting the apoptotic activation of caspase-3 [7].

The growth of Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Tetrahymena thermophila is not inhibited by Ar(g) under hydrostatic pressure, but can in fact reverse the growth inhibitory action of hydrostatic pressures [8].
